Another recall from Toyota, who became world’s top autoseller in 2008. Japanese automaker Toyota said on Friday, 16th April 2010 it will recall 870,000 Sienna minivans in the United States and Canada because of corrosion problems.

The recall affects 1998 through 2010 Sienna minivans which Toyota said could experience corrosion in the spare tire carrier cable if they have been operated in cold climates with high road salt use.

The announcement came a day after the world’s biggest automaker said it would suspend production and worldwide sales of its Lexus GX 460 and would conduct safety tests on all its SUVs due to reports of rollover risk.

“In the worst case, the carrier cable may fail and the spare tire could become separated from the vehicle, a road hazard for following vehicles that increases the likelihood of a crash,” Toyota said in a statement that did not indicate whether any accidents or injuries had been reported as a result of the defect.

Toyota said it is currently working to develop a remedy for the problem. “Until this remedy is developed, customers will receive an interim notice instructing them to bring their vehicle to a dealership for a preliminary inspection,” the automaker said.

“Once the remedy has been developed, customers will receive a secondary notice advising the customer of the remedy availability.”

The recall involves about 600,000 minivans in the United States and another 270,000 in Canada, the automaker said.

Toyota, which overtook General Motors in 2008 as the world’s top auto seller, has been bedeviled by a series of safety issues that have raised questions about whether it sacrificed its legendary quality to become number one.

Toyota executives were hauled over the coals in the US Congress earlier this year and the company’s previously stellar reputation for safety was left in tatters after it recalled more than eight million vehicles beginning late 2009 for brake and accelerator defects.

The automaker has been hit with at least 97 lawsuits seeking damages for injury or death linked to sudden acceleration and 138 class action lawsuits from customers suing to recoup losses in the resale value of Toyota vehicles.

The company faces a record 16.4-million-dollar fine in the United States for its failure to notify authorities quickly about problems with “sticky pedals” that could force vehicles to speed out of control and officials have warned that further fines are possible.

Toyota suspended production and global sales of the Lexus GX 460 sport utility vehicle after US magazine Consumer Reports gave the SUV a rare “Don’t Buy: Safety Risk” rating Thursday in the latest blow to the reputation of the embattled Japanese auto giant.

When pushed to its limits, the rear of the GX “slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control,” the magazine said.

Toyota said it will work on analyzing potential safety risks in the model, which has already sold 6,000 units.

Lexus

Toyota has a full-blown crisis on its hands. As has been widely reported, sticking gas pedals and potentially dangerous floor mats caused Toyota to recall 5.3 million vehicles since last fall, including some of its most popular models. The floor-mat problem led the company to call back models from its high-end Lexus brand, hitherto renowned for quality and reliability. These problems has been compounded by a long-delayed and less-than-reassuring response from Toyota.

Consider the problems themselves. In August, a Lexus ES 350 was weaving wildly and at high speed through traffic on a highway near San Diego until it struck another car, veered off the road entirely, crashed through a fence, hit a dirt embankment and soared more than 100 feet before crashing. The passengers, off-duty police officer Mark Saylor, 45, his wife, his 13-year-old daughter and his brother-in-law, were killed. Just before the crash, a passenger had dialed 911 and reported that the gas pedal was stuck and the car was out of control.

Toyota attributed the problem in the Lexus to a floor mat. In November, the company said in a letter to customers that “no defect exists in vehicles in which the driver’s floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration immediately denounced Toyota’s explanation as “inaccurate and misleading,” saying the problem was “related to accelerator and floor-pan design.”

Toyota’s credibility is also on the line. The damage to Toyota’s reputation is incalculable. The damage to its brands isn’t: That’s apparent in the weak January sales figures Toyota released Tuesday.

Toyota shares were over $90 as recently as Jan. 19. They closed Tuesday at $78.18, which strikes me as a modest decline under the circumstances. If I owned shares, I’d seize the chance to get out. Toyota has a vast infrastructure and a long history of quality and innovation. But its floor-mat and gas-pedal nightmares are likely just beginning.

Although the name (a combination of “tiger” and “iguana”) sounds like it was coined by Napoleon Dynamite, the new addition to the Volkswagen line-up better fits the classic image of Volkswagen than the larger Touaureg (named after a nomadic North African tribe).

Powered by a turbo-charged 4-cylinder engine, the little Tiguan is genuinely fun to drive. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and easily while getting the most out of the engine.

An available panoramic sunroof bathes the interior in light, making it feel roomier inside, although the Tiguan is plenty comfortable as it is.

The Forester has always been a solid, practical crossover. But while the last-generation version looked like a side-up shoe box on wheels, the latest model has gained some curves while retaining all its practical appeal. This new version is the biggest reason that Subaru was the only auto brand with significant volume to get a sales increase – albeit a small one – last year.

The Forester straddles that not-so-fine line between wagon and SUV. From behind the steering wheel, it definitely feels like a car – and a good one at that. Especially with the optional turbocharged engine, there’s plenty of power and no “turbo lag.” (In other words, the turbocharger comes on smoothly rather than giving an abrupt jump in power as you accelerate.)

The Forester’s not exactly a blast to drive, though. The steering and suspension aren’t as sharp as they could be, but the handling is fundamentally secure and balanced.

Safety, as always, is a big selling point for this Subaru. It earned a “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The CX-7 has a sharp, sporty look that it manages with minimal impact on practicality and visibility. Its turbocharged engine also offers ample, if not blazing, power.

Steering feels sharp and secure. While it doesn’t quite offer the sports car feel its athletic looks would suggest, the CX-7 is definitely one of the better drivers among these small crossovers.

If you like the exterior, you’ll love the interior, which has stylish chrome touches in a very businesslike look overall. The only problem is some of that chrome tends to throw annoying reflections into the windshield on sunny days.

Mileage: 27 mpg Hwy, 22 mpg City
IIHS Top Safety Pick: Yes

With its shallow, sloping back window, the Rogue almost doesn’t look like an SUV at all. It’s part of a new family of crossovers that are basically tall hatchback cars. (If you remember the 1980s AMC Eagle, the profile will look familiar)

At this point, one has to ask: Why am I buying an SUV, anyway? While it’s not bad, the rear storage space is less than competitors offer. Rearward visibility, a weak point in most SUVs, is really challenged in this one.

On the positive side, the Rogue is as cute as a kitten in a sock drawer. (Obviously that’s a big part of the point here.) The back seats feel a little tight for daily use, but the front seats offer ample room and comfort. The high grand clearance, especially combined with all-wheel-drive, still offers advantages in deep snow when compared with a typical small car.

The steering is really good, but the driving enjoyment is dulled down by the continuously variable transmission. It makes for efficient power use but, keeping the engine at a constant drone without any up-shifts or down-shifts, there’s not much feeling of power.

Sticker price: $20,435 – $27,670
AOL ‘market price’: $19,538 – $25,681
Mileage: 28 mpg Hwy, 22 mpg City
IIHS Top Safety Pick: Yes

Ford has a way of introducing new or redesigned vehicles, but waiting to give them new engines or transmissions that really put them over the top.

Case in point: the 2009 Ford Escape. New engines and transmissions have made the new model really enjoyable to drive. Despite its truckish looks, it handles nicely on the road.

And the new 4-cylinder offers plenty of power while delivering good fuel economy. (In this bunch, the Escape ties the Rav4 as the most efficient. And we’re not talking about the hybrid Escape here, either.) The engine is distressingly noisy when pushed, though.

While it doesn’t offer third-row seats like the Rav4, the Escape’s tall, boxy style maximizes its SUV utility. Seat comfort, particularly in the front, is a weak point, though.

The Escape’s “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also applies to the closely related Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute as well as to hybrid versions of all three. Buyers also get the benefit of Ford’s quality turnaround. Ford cars and crossovers are now as reliable as any on market, including Toyota’s and Honda’s.

Another pioneer and perennial fan-favorite is the Honda CR-V, which retains a lot of its original appeal. Competition is heating up, though.

A good, practical little vehicle, the CR-V offers commendable performance and decent mileage. In the fuel economy department, Honda is riding on its reputation a bit here. While the CR-V is efficient, it’s not a stand-out in the class.

As always with Honda, interior design and materials are top notch. For bigger folks, the driver’s seat can feel a bit snug, though.

The CR-V also has a good reputation for reliability and it, too, has earned a “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

IIHS Top Safety Pick: Yes

The Rav4 remains king of the hill among small SUVs. The design may not be terribly exciting, but hot looks are rarely Toyota’s big selling point.

Fuel economy, reliability and practicality are what draws Toyota buyers. Added to that – the Rav4 is surprisingly enjoyable to drive. Even with its standard 4-cylinder engine, there’s ample power. And with the stronger V6 under the hood, the Rav4′s fuel economy is still better than some competitors’ 4-cylinder models.

The Rav4 also offers something most vehicles in this class don’t: an optional third row of seats. You’re way-backers won’t be stretching out in comfort, but at least they’ll have proper seats and seatbelts.

The Rav4 also earned a “Top Safety Pick” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, something that a surprising number of these small SUVs have pulled off.
